Restoration Outreach Programs - Restoring Lives Through Christ on East Colfax

Motel Barbecue Outreach

Motel Barbecue Outreach

Why should you and your team partner with ROP in a Motel Barbecue Outreach?

  • Strategic outreach for ROP. Builds awareness among motel population about ROP’s progams and Restoration Worship Center and encourages their participation.
  • ROP feels especially called to reach out to the people trapped living in shabby conditions in Colfax motels with the love of Christ.
  • Great opportunity to love on needy people simply by offering hot meal, hanging out, and praying with them. The barbecues offer a simple repeatable model for outreach.
  • Good exposure / introduction to ministry in the city on one-time basis – usually on a Saturday afternoon in about 4 hrs. (eg. 4-8 p.m.)
  • Great for groups of 6-12 people (possibly more depending on the size of the motel which range is size from 18 to 50 rooms)

Here’s what a typical Motel Barbecue Outreach will look like:

  • Volunteer group meets at ROP building to pick up grills and supplies 1 hr. before barbecue. (between 2 and 4 p.m. depending on time of year)
  • Barbecue materials set up at motel and cooking begins between 2:45 and 4:45 p.m. on a Saturday (Sunday is an option if preferred by group)
  • Volunteers and staff knock on doors and invite all residents to come to barbecue. (All residents have received flier from ROP via motel management 1-2 days earlier.)
  • Volunteers and staff visit with participants. As opportunities arise, we pray with attendees, share about ROP programs, invite people to come to Restoration Worship Center (ROP’s affiliated church), but mostly we want to share God’s love with hurting people in whatever way God leads.
  • After 2 hours (or earlier if the crowd dissipates) we pack up our stuff and return to ROP’s building where we debrief and pray for those we met at the barbecue.
  • If possible, we ask our MBO teams to help by also underwriting the cost of the food which is approximately $1.50 – $2.00/person
  • In the event of inclement weather, we can move barbecue to ROP and use ROP van to transport motel residents to that locations
